So my partner in the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Bernie Su, has already talked about why there are only three Benne Sisters in our adaptation (and five in the novel) and since I just saw a much-thumbed comment lamenting the decision, I wanted to put my two cents in.

I definitely thought about all this when Lizzie revealed that there were only three children in the family. Another thing that struck me is that the LBD is supposed to be adjusted to our times. Today, it would definitely be more common for the average family in the US to have three daughters than for it to have five. If Mrs. Bennet is supposed to be the president of the 2.5 WPF Club, it’s a lot more realistic that she has 3 kids. ;) I think that the loss of Kitty and Mary is highly justified and certainly simplifies matters.
